Doctor Who and the Ties that Bind.

Part Two

Improvisation

There was no Time here, inside Lei-yu's magical, wonderful, living ship. Well there was a personal time, which without hearts would not beat and blood would not flow, but there was no Time as in the thing that flowed one way through the rest of the universe. Making that distinction had been difficult. She understood this concept, like how things could be bigger on the inside then the outside, to have math that explained it. Unlike the simple changes in dimension that the latter required, the idea that there was no Time here was far too complex for her to understand without a lifetime of intense study. For those who were primitive but grasped this truth the Doctor's craft must have seemed rather magical. As it was, she knew better then to fall into the trap of thinking there was a mystical reason for even such a difficult property of the ship's existence. Instead of giving herself headaches trying to understand something so far beyond her, however, the dark headed girl chose to just accept the situation. Because she acknowledged the idea, one the first things that River Tam noticed once she woke up was the innate sense of there being no Time – no flow of time through her awareness. While she had been unsettled by this at first, she was now becoming used to this gauge of what state of “space” they were traveling through. It had taken her two sleep-cycles to grasp exactly what it had been that bothered her. Now she was sitting up in bed, surrounded by things that were but were not hers, listening to the hum of the walls, actually feeling a sense of peace and safety that she had not experienced in a very long while.

I've gotten a second job as a freelance writer.  What this means is my time is extremely limited.  I am working on threads 8, in what limited time I have.  I have 30 of tangled web started.  Someone give me another 4 hours in the day please!

Just wanting to let you all know - I've got beggars asking for a new chapter of my non-Who related Riddick fic, "A Passage" Because those chapters average about 20 pages, I've been working on one and am about 1/3 of the way through on it.  This means, of course, that I'm not writing as much on the Who stuff, because suddenly I have a unique character from the other fic actually working with me.  Another week maybe, and I'll have that crowd settled for another year *winks*

In the mean time- I'm working on "all about" part 10, which follows "Threads" . I've got another chapter of "tangled" in the works, and my TARDIS pov fic is moving into part 4- about 130 pages to cull through there.

And of course Ties will be getting an adult brush up for chapter 2 *grins*

A/N: here it is the first chapter of the LONG awaited Adult version of Ties that Bind. Eventually I'll get back to making graphics, but hey, you all love me anyway, right?

Short Summary: Sequel to Doctor Who and the Great Eclipse. The TimeWar left him shattered & alone. Experiments left her shattered & open. The tools for revenge also form a web that cannot be broken. Before he met Rose, The Doctor had to survive meeting Her... A Doctor Who / Firefly / Riddick (Dark Fury) crossover.

Summary: The Doctor, reeling from the effects of the TimeWar as the last surviving TimeLord, stumbled into a situation he was unable to ignore when the TARDIS landed him inside a ship clearly in trouble. After the rescue, he found himself left with eight survivors that he must somehow get to safety. But the situation was not as cut and dry as he might like. His people may be gone, but the stamp he’d made on the universe still existed, and he discovered himself caught in a web spun of the choices made in the past…

2517; Something in the past prompted humanity to explode out from their home world. Could the events of 2164 be responsible? Was Earth a myth or was it real? In fleeing Earth-that-Was, humanity scattered to the stars across the galactic arm. Initial survey teams targeted likely planets and systems for habitation and not all of them ended up on the same side of the sector. Blue Sun exists on one side, separated by a patch of ‘wild space’ filled with exotic binary and triple star systems, from the rest of civilized space. Few ships brave the route. But luck had it that one ship did. Risking a ghost run, the only contact that the two sides have, the Hunter-Gratzner crashed midway through its journey. Original Port of Departure: Eavesdown Docks, Persephone. Mixed Sino-Anglo culture. Original Port of Call: Tangiers-5. Darkside. Mixed Islamic-Anglo culture. Crew complement: Four. Passengers: Forty. Living ‘Cargo’: Two. Survivors: Eight plus One

So what happens to Dr. Simon Tam, his brilliant but damaged sister, a convicted murder by the name of Richard B. Riddick, and the other survivors from the crash of the Hunter-Gratzner at planet M-344/G-2 now that they are on their way home? What secrets does Jack B. Badd hold? And just how is this related to the TimeWar?

 A Doctor Who / Firefly / Riddick cross-over.

Features Doctor 9, Rose Tyler, The cast of “Firefly”, and the survivors from Pitch Black: Carolyn Fry, William J. Johns, Imam Abu al’Walid, ‘Jack B. Badd’, Ali Abdullah, and Richard B. Riddick…

Part One:

Aggravation

The TARDIS sat, rather innocently, in the Time Vortex. The human passengers had no idea that the ship was delaying at all, being that they expected there to be time in transit. Normally such a small hop would have been quite fast and easily done. Only this was not a normal situation. One would think that being a Time Lord would make one aware of such things, but for several sleep cycles the pilot of the rather cranky and headstrong living ship remained oblivious the situation, trying one trick after another to ease her out of the vortex. She thwarted each one without causing him further pain.

Nothing the Doctor did could force her to budge if she didn't want to. That was the nature of their bond. They were equal partners in this adventure of their life. So she retained her free will, so rare a thing in her species, and found that the emotions (ones she wasn't supposed to have) of fear and worry made her protective enough to refuse his commands to exit into normal space. She'd not be the cause of more pain if it would kill him. Even if she had to cause him some to convince him of it. Well, she had been forced to zap him, after all. It wasn't her fault that he found the remains of some old override that he tried to repair... It had been the one thing that would have involuntarily made her materialize.

Hey I'm working on chapter 28 with the "big thing" between Mal and the Doctor... this is Tangled Web I'm talking about, of course. The plot bunnies want Mal to not be a jerk, and they are making him too willing. :P So there's some delay as I beat them, OK?

:D

I had hoped to get it finished this long weekend but it just didn't quite work out that way.

I'll be splitting the next part of How the Doctor was Won and posting it here this week. Starting tonight. So I can then post the part after as I get it finished and feel like I am indeed doing something.... *looks at the 130 pages of script still to work with* I can't seem to get this bear to behave either.

And captured Riddick is grousing... Romana is hiding... and preggers Nine is standing here glaring at me.
Now where did Two and Jamie get off to and why can't I find Rose?

Part Two E: Communicating

The now familiar sound of the danger tone fills the air again, “It's happening every quarter of a minute,” Susan calls.

“Well what does that prove?” Ian asks.

It is Barbara that begins piecing the clues together. “That we have a measure of time as long as it lasts. Yes of course, that explains the clock face. We had time taken away from us, and now it's being given back to us... because it's running out!”

At that guess my stranglehold on the central piston that keeps the Eye of Harmony under control slips, causing an explosion that rattles the room and throws everyone off balance. This forces the Time Rotor to rise and fall. “The column!” Susan exclaims.

“But it…it's impossible!” My Doctor is shocked.

Oh damn it all. They break into a fight, Susan excluded. The Time Lord is saying, “What is inside, madam, is most important at the moment. I know now who's responsible. You are, you've sabotaged my ship.” Ian and Barbara protest that they haven’t touched anything, but the stubborn pilot of mine keeps right up with his accusations, “You are the cause of this disaster. And you've both knocked Su... you…you've knocked both Susan and I un…unconscious.”

“Oh don't be ridiculous, we were all knocked out,” Barbara says.

“A charade. You attacked us,” my Doctor insists, speaking right over Ian, “And when we were lying helpless on the floor, you tampered with my…my controls.”

Ian shouts at him, “But you checked everything yourself, and you couldn't find anything wrong with it!”

Part Two C: Communicating

I must find a way to communicate, and I must do it quickly. The explosion sends my Doctor to the floor, unconscious but stable. My screams at him are getting nowhere. Ian has landed in a chair and Susan is across the controls. She too is totally unconscious. Barbara wakes, and I try to reach her, hoping beyond hope that she will hear me. Instead she becomes disoriented stumbling through the room until she reaches something that has emotional meaning to her, “Mr. Chesterton…Ian Chesterton?” She is puzzled and unsure, and I realize that my attempt at reaching her is interfering with her ability to think. This won’t do. I need to try something else. But what?

Then Susan stirs, “I thought...” She staggers toward the other woman, “I know you.” I again try to communicate telepathically, only this causes the young, still developing, Gallifreyan to cringe and recoil, holding her head and fighting me off, “Ow!”

Barbara has turned toward her, concerned, “Have you hurt your head?”

Part Two B: Communicating

Tearing away from Event damages other instruments. I have no idea how far I’ve gone in that hop, nor if I’m even on the same world, at first, when I materialize. I must wonder how much a role I’ve played in the taking of the two teachers from their time. It has been lonely, these last few decades. I’m starved for companionship, as my pilot must be. While these two humans have far less intelligence than most Gallifreyans they possess a quickness and a life force that burns brightly to compensate. And they are mentally older than Susan is, more able to relate to my Doctor than the young child can. What I do know is that this location may teach the new arrivals exactly how much they have to learn in order to understand exactly how narrow minded they really are. I can only hope that they see…

My Doctor stares off into space, shocked at his actions. The two humans have survived their first trip into the vortex and he knows that means they are not human anymore, but something changed, different, altered in ways that will never be undone. Although they are unconscious they still live. But what has he done? Miss Wright comes too first, gaining her feet. She blinks and then kneels down at the man’s side. He’s on the floor still, and she shakes him gently, “Ian? Ian?”

Echoes.

I can sense echoes of my future self, crossing the Vortex, passing by this time and this place and once even stopping. This means that eventually things will work out and I will fly again. I have no worries. I could always see the future; the problem is telling which one is the one that I’m in the middle of. Five months I have sat here, inside my sibling, Event, not communicating with her as I might be wont to do, but listening to her whispers of pain as she is stretched across the five dimensions in ways I can’t even begin to understand. She never possessed the intelligence to understand her own situation much less explain it to another. We came about together, two singularities of intelligence, consciousness, and awareness, born of Validium. Both once destined to be weapons in an ancient war, which by one choice or another ended up taking very different paths to the same end. This end. Exiled from our kind, both as rogue elements against Mother, and because our male bonded have chosen this path.

I know she is bonded to a Gallifreyan, much like I am, but that is where our similarities end. Her pilot exists in thirteen forms, some of which are freakish in nature. Mine is whole and in one form, but is just as aberrant in the fact that he has secrets and past lives that he shared with me, that I alone now remember. While we were both born of Validium and felt the call of a Gallifreyan engineer, she tried to escape and was caught by her bonded, while I gave in and became what I am now. She’s no longer a weapon, true enough, but she’s no time ship either. She’s a temporal event, acting as a focus across time and space, like the head of a universal fungi of nearly invisible mycelium that only shows when places like this junkyard pop up as though a mushroom might. The presence of Event’s temporal pull allowed me to get back here even with the damage I suffered just prior to the attempt. I think I sense these echoes because I keep being shifted off my path slightly by that same pull much as a black hole diverts everything around it.

May. 15th, 2009 @ 11:23 am How the Doctor Was Won: Or the Trials of Trying to Catch a Stubborn Time Lord. 1/?

AN:  This can be a stand alone story. It’s written from the TARDIS’ POV and covers from the moment of ‘awareness’ to just before  “Unearthly Child” A good portion of this is a zip past the adventures and focuses on how / why the ‘Ship’ or Verity and the Doctor ended up with the relationship that they possess. This represents about a week’s worth of research, mostly on the web, checking stories, looking at different Doctor or Gallifrey based timelines, and in general wondering why no one has bothered with a TARDIS specific timeline. This roughly comprises one, and I’ve posted in TARDIS Parking a post that is a more cut and dry timeline format. My basic outline follows the timeline from Rassilon, Omega, and that Other guy, the very well done website by William B. Swift, with nods to the Canon Keeper’s Guide, which is part of Outpost Gallifrey. The Guide is compiled by David Hancock and Shaun Lyon. Where I altered things was at points that the placement was questionable and I thought the events made more sense elsewhere. Thanks to all of them for the great reference tools. Note, one thing I don’t use much of are the technical guides to the TARDIS. There are several very well done guides out there, but that information really ended up being less than important than I thought it would be. William B. Swift’s Tardis manual has a great ‘birth to death’ section though. If I’ve copied some of the words used it’s because I couldn’t think of any better way to say it… I honestly don’t mean to steal. :-D

How the Doctor was Won: Or the trials of trying to catch a stubborn Time Lord.

Part One: Meeting

I can remember… so very much more that just this life. There’s a sense of ‘before’ that I can’t shake. It seems sometimes that I’ve been around forever, here in this blackness, in the Caldera womb, right on the edge of this singularity’s core since time began. But that isn’t quite true. There’s another place called the Slaughter House where I truly began. It was in escaping from there that I found my way to the Caldera. There were others that made the jump, some less aware than I was, while others were about the same. I believe that I am the final proof of ‘I think therefore I am’ but my - sister, Lolita, would gladly argue the point, I’m sure. She believes that she is that proof. It’s a matter of perception. To the unobservant it would appear that we are nothing more than self-realized weapons, creatures of destruction. And yet, we are so much more. We, I say, because in the beginning there were fourteen of us. But only two were truly genius.

May. 15th, 2009 @ 10:55 am Nuts... nuts and more nuts...
My brain has been focused on How the Doctor was Won and the little aspirin problem there in.

You see, Vicki is given aspirin by Barbara that Barbara got from a cluttered table in the control room. She tells Vicki that the pills came from the Doctor's medicine kit.

Of course as we all know later it is established that aspirin can kill a Time Lord.

So what was the Doctor doing with a vial of aspirin in his control room?
Was it - - a last ditch escape route if he was caught by his people?
Something brought on board at another one of his stops that he never looked too closely at?
An honest mistake in the evolving mythos of the show?

How do I make it fit?

Here are the thoughts I had about it.
One: change the substance to something else. I'd have to look and see what other common medications were used in the 1960's of course. It would have to be something Barbara recognizes in order for her to take it from the box.
Or Two: explain exactly what was in that box that Barbara got into and why it was there (IE a 'final death' kit for if the Doctor was caught).  Only problem is, would the first Doctor and Susan be desperate enough in their flight from Gallifrey to stoop to such measures? I can only assume that if I go this route then the punishment for the crime of stealing a TARDIS and whatever else the Doctor did in order to leave was something very terrifying. Although I'm not sure what it would be that would make the Doctor willing to forgo all his regenerations to avoid it.
Or Three: invent someplace for Susan and the Doctor to have picked up a rather normal medicine kit from Earth that they never bothered to open and remove the deadly substance from. They'd have to have used extra care to get rid of the pills after all.

Also, I've posted this on Teaspoon and FF.net. Should I post it here too? (I'd have to break down the existing chapters into smaller sections to get it to fit.) Would anyone like me to?
Eh... I've decided to, yeah. Smaller chunks of course. :)

May. 11th, 2009 @ 08:19 pm working on stuffs...
Since Great Eclipse is finished I'm working on Ties that Bind (and because others have used this title I'm thinking of a rename).

Um... rename. I suppose suggestions on the theme would be helpful.
Will ponder that some more.

Also working on Threads, Tangled Web, and keeping my eyes / ears peeled for more good scenes for Temporal Ripples. I will confess that How the Doctor was Won is still cooking. I just need the correct mood for it, being from a single viewpoint and all.

Tangled Web
: the current chapter finishes up Bushwhacked. There's a span of time before the next story for Firefly (Shindig) and I'm seriously considering tossing in "End of the World" before going into it. The Doctor is going a bit cabin crazy and if I sneak in a parasite snagging scene that locks it away and have Mal get cold feet I could see 9 leaving (with Rich, River, Rose, Jack, and Inara) long enough to cool off. And Verity would be looking for a replacement Void, so someone on that station might end up helping a bit.

Thoughts?

A/N Double length Chapter. Final one. Two parts.  Some smut in the last shower scene, which follows this, but the bunnies pulled away from it being overly graphic. It's between Richard and the Doctor, by the way. Chapter header to follow, eventually.

Aurora, part one.

The cavern around them gave them all the safety they needed. The native glowing lifeforms more than made up for the loss of the fiber optic light source. The TARDIS sat as a dark shape against a vividly colored wall that was moving as the larvae scurried into more sheltered locations. The cold would eventually drive most of the life deeper into the caverns and kill what couldn't move. The spore clouds that mingled with the falling snow revealed that this was something easily dealt with, however.

Refuge, then, was fleeting. They were not off the planet yet. While none of the bioraptors dared to brave the glowing creatures that dotted the surfaces here, the adults in the group saw the clear signs that time was working the situation back in favor of the hammerheads. Thus, they were antsy. Moving inside something, even an odd closet-sized, blue crate was top priority. Verity was just a few feet from them, and had been closer but for the fact that they were trying to shelter under overhangs that existed farther away from her.

Sacrifice

“‘M fine, me. -- Just a bit here to gather my balance, lad.”

Richard B. Riddick was a con, a murderer, and a trained killer – none of these things prepared him for the experience he was currently having. He'd been exposed to more situations demanding an impossible slip than probably anyone in the 'verse. Slams, war zones, tricky crime scenes, pirate attacks, merc chases... He'd gotten through them all, time and time again. He was one of the few to have slipped triple-max security. As long as he didn't care about those around him he'd survive any fucking thing.

Only now he did care.

Each of the other survivors had touched his soul in some way or another, over the months he'd lived with them. If not for the eclipse he would have been perfectly fine to live his life out here, with this small bunch of people. He imagined though that none of them really would agree with him about that, but he really didn't care one way or the other. The situation was that the eclipse had happened, and they had ended up out in the dark trying to make their way to the Doctor's ship. They'd been very lucky. Or rather the Doctor had done an amazing little trick to keep the natives at bay. He had to admire that.

A/N: No chapter header yet. I'm working on it. I've got a massive migraine and the thought of playing with graphics at the moment makes me dizzy. :P  However, I do have a chapter finished. So here's the read.

Ensnare

The snow-flecked darkness was filled with inhuman sounds. If hell was icy cold and filled with ravenous blue-blooded demons then this place might actually be worse. At least demons would have enough humanity to them to appear understandable along evil lines. These creatures however, were another beast entirely. Clicks, howls, sweeping waves of sound, all of which were completely alien to even the Doctor's ears, rolled like a chaotic storm around them. The snow was more like a white wall, flowing every which way, lending a surreal air to the entire, deadly, venture.

In addition to the vocalizations and piercing repeated snapping noise was another sound. This was an booming clash of bone-on-bone. Large males fighting for dominance, battering their wedge shaped crest against one another as they vied for a larger share of the healthy breeding females. If this were all that they could hear, things would fall into the estimated 'worse than hell' range but the third component to the noise made them uncomfortable for still yet another reason. The chilling calls of violent, repeated sex seemed to come at them with increasing volume the closer they got to the Doctor's TARDIS.

A/N: Exactly 100 words. Sort of a 'What if' bit that I may elaborate on when I get to The Ribos Operation. Part of the Soul Web Series. Here the White Guardian has just thrust Romana on the Doctor as a new companion, but having met her he realizes who she is. Different choices in the past allows him to make slightly different choices now... He'll let her chose 'Romana' over 'Fred' after he's used the latter a bit, rather cheerfully. Although it will be a struggle to maintain that cheer, when he realizes he must cancel that vacation with Jamie he's got planned...

PS, Should I post this on Teaspoon or on FF.net?

He knew who she was the moment 'Fred' crossed her lips.

She didn't have the blond hair nor heart-shaped face he recalled.

The haughty airs almost set him off.

He knew he could charm her.

So he paused and regarded her carefully.

“'Fred' it is then,” he replied before explaining,

“Romanadvoratrelundar is rather a mouthful to shout when threatened.”

She blinked at him in surprise.

Impossibly, Romana didn't know if agreement to her choice,

Or his dazzling smile stunned her more.

“Tea?” he offered.

“Tea?”

“What do they teach at the Academe these days? Everyone should know about Tea!”

A/N: Exactly 100 words, a poem form. Sort of a 'What if' bit that I may elaborate on when I get to War Games. Part of the Soul Web Series. Here Zoe Heriot knows Jamie and the Doctor are a couple and that they have a small son. However, at the end of War Games she refuses to leave the Doctor's side. Maybe she knows that the Time Lords will hunt for the Doctor's companions if he's all alone? So Jamie goes, with his infant son, to the safe house set up on Earth. And the Doctor happens upon a cunning plan to save Zoe and keep her with him, too.

He wanted to save her, But Zoe, unlike Jamie, refused to leave him.

Instead of sending her away, then, another option came into play.

Unable to endure the thought of having her memories stripped away,

The Doctor came up with disguising her as Lady Larna, Mother of Susan.

It was only fitting, as he loved her like a daughter,

That Zoe would become one, bonded as his Tyro.

When the Time Lords arrived, punishment at hand,

They found instead of one Renegade, two.

Jamie, in a Jade Pagoda, sheltered at Bannerman Road.

And The Doctor knew his family was safe.

Arrears

The five hours passed with excruciating slowness. The ice helped hold in the heat and River, Suleiman, Ali and Jack did sleep. Imam, Carolyn, Simon, and Paris dozed. William, Richard and the Doctor remained on high alert with the redhead watching the other two more closely than he had before. The tension between them was like a giant bear loose in a living room, or something. He'd not see so much unresolved sexual tension since school. It was annoying and distracting. What could he do to push them together to get this out of the way?

Johns figured that the Doctor was the possessive 'hands off whats mine' type. So he'd start flirting with Rich and watch how the man reacted. And maybe it would have the side effect of telling him if Fry was interested. In one of them at least. With his rotten luck he'd discover that the blond wanted Riddick too. He looked away from the group and out at the distorted view blocked by clear ice. Nothing but black. Solid pure black. Not like space at all. It occurred to him that he hated this place. He wanted off this rock so badly that he'd do anything at this point for a chance of it.

A/N: Finally...  One more difficult chapter, I think and then the extra long one to finish... :-)

Break

River had turned back to the Doctor after her conversation with her brother. She had not wanted to leave his side even though it was more than past time to move on. The rest had helped Ali, at least, if not Jack. But the Time Lord frowned and fiddled with his sonic screwdriver a bit more and announced, “We're stopping here for a few hours. Everyone settle down and try to get some rest.” The adults all looked at him, very surprised. Richard moved back with Jack to the space blanket and sheet that had reappeared. Imam made sure that Ali and Suleiman both were next to Jack, before placing himself as a further protection. Since Jack refused to let go of the ex-ranger Riddick was on his other side. The fellow kept a blank face, aside from the slight pleading glance he shot at the Doctor. She knew what the bronze complexioned man needed, of course. After a few moments of mental prodding the alien Lei-yu gave in and guided them both that direction. The difficulty was that more contact soothed them immediately but made the eventual connection that much harder to fight. His spike of fear was enough to make River twist to act as a barrier between the two, without much thought as to how it impacted her role in all of it. She found herself being bodily moved to the other side, still tucked into his form, but with her brother near her back instead of Richard.

She made a token mental protest, considering how she was trying to help him, and got back from him the definite sense that he knew what he was doing, what the risks were, and that he'd face the price when the time came. She needed to focus on herself and worry less about his physical needs. If only it were that easy. The increased clove spiciness in his sweet scent filled her nose and she buried her face into the leather of his jacket to hide her flush from it. Part of her was hot again, slick, sensitive and tingling. Fearful he'd push her away, she curled her hands into his tee around his middle and felt Richard scoot closer against her fingers even though they were separated by thick leather. He never reached his mind toward hers, and yet she felt his crystalline barriers that guarded it ease open along a million little fractures as he waited for her mental flow. She nuzzled into the Doctor's cool body and allowed her mind to wash gently into Richard's. She knew Lei-yu was aware of this now, more so than before because she followed his link to Amadak through the storm clouds in his mind in order to reach the other. River felt those intense blue eyes looking at her then over at Rich, as the pieces fell into place. With a slight unheard vibration the Doctor shifted her off the cave floor and onto his lap to allow Simon to move in a bit closer. She sighed and relaxed.

Great Eclipse:

Writing is being difficult. It's Chapter 30, all there is to it.  I've only got a handful of chapters left here and it seems like 30 and 31 are going to take a lot of careful slow thought. I've been working on 30 since I posted 29 and I've only managed to revise a tiny bit (and add 3 pages).

Someone tell the smut bunnies that they can't have sex in the hammerhead tunnels, please! Heck it's not even safe to be thinking about it, and yet that's all I can get the characters to do.

OK, Imam, Ali, Simon, Carolyn, and Jack are not.

Suleiman's thinking about River...
River's thinking about Nine...
Nine's thinking about Verity and Richard (and trying to not think about River, but she's in his lap curled into a ball acting like she's asleep).
Richard's trying very hard to not think at all (rather he's very much fighting acting on his impulses).
William's thinking about Carolyn.
And we'll not go into what Paris might be thinkin', OK?

See... The smut bunnies are out and I can't seem to get them caged again.

Threads of Time:

Honestly, I've not thought about  this. I think I need to get chapter 30 and 31 out of the way first.
Plus I've still got section 4 of How the Doctor was Won that I should try to work on.
I think the Doctor has a bit of a personality crisis after he leaves Susan (gads does he giggle and laugh a lot after that... ). Maybe he's just trying to cope with the loss? Or perhaps it was the Actor trying to be less gruff? Who knows. It's just strange is all. I will finish that section though.

Tangled Web:

OK
I need to finish up "Bushwhacked" and decide where to head from here. I'm tending toward them trying to contain the parasite and the Doctor, Rich, River, Jack and maybe Inara trying to take Rose back home for a visit (which will end them up in a few other places first, of course). Just to break up the Firefly bits and to keep Nine from going insane from being stuck in one time period (plus Verity analyses those records of what happened to River and really does not want him dealing with that yet).

I thought I'd post something, at least, to keep everyone informed.

Submersion

The new passage led them further down; crossing under the canyon by tens of meters at the least. The temperature seemed to level off into one of constant cool-but-not-chilly. All told it was cold enough that the Doctor blended in with the background temperature and for once did not appear so much cooler that he was showing up in Riddick's vision as a wash of navy-blue with purple-pink edges. At least it was dry here. There was no sound of the clicking screeches from the native hammerheads either.

They walked and walked, still on high alert and as silently as possible, listening for any sound that would give away the location of their hunters. There were several twisting passages that led off into the darkness but because the visible floor was a jumble of rocks and rough surfaces they bypassed those in favor of the wide, nearly dry, somewhat smooth route they were already on. As they walked the floor went from dry to slightly damp, the natural drainage ruts giving way to a broad but very shallow stream. After some careful poking and some scanning they determined that it was safe enough to continue on this route because the rock underfoot was dampened by a slight sheet of water, barely a fraction of a centimeter thick, and still was rough enough for their shoes to grip.

Wonderland

Goggles off and tucked into a hard protective case in his sweater pocket, Riddick was scanning the tall shelves with their core samples, up high, looking for signs of life more than anything else. His eyes darted back and forth, the light he kept with him turned off so that it didn’t interfere with his nightvision. Everything was a wash of pinks, purples, and navies, with the occasional white highlight. He could read the dates on the shelves and the scientific notations that indicated possible ages and depths of each sample, if he concentrated on it. But right now he needed to detect life-signs, heat, movement, and if possible do it with enough advance warning to get his light turned on while remembering to not look at it.

It was the Doctor's urging that made him break away from the others, braving to scout. He had his shiv, and he had his hand light. Everyone else should wait for him to give an 'all clear'. Should. Didn't mean they would however. They'd all made it through the run, which was fuckin' amazing in it's own right. Now he could feel Death closing in on them. Which of them would she take?

A/N: This chapter features some added hints as to the eventual direction that River's healing will take her. It's complicated and interwoven with her eventual role in later stories. She is well aware of the sexual overtones but neither her nor the Doctor intend to go that way any time soon. (Yes, she might end up being River Song, in a regeneration or thirteen. :-P ). Also this chapter starts the mad dash to Verity. PS. I love how this picture turned out.

Motility

He was used to being in motion. Never stopping. Never looking back. Always moving, forward like an obsession. He knew that someday it would catch up to him. His past, so very painful in so many ways, had to. Now it seemed as though someone or something had realized the fact that he spent all his time running and had decided for him to make him stop, to make him face his past, starting with the remainder of his beloved grand-daughter, Susan. That was, her descendants. He'd come to terms with the fact that she had in fact set down roots and created a triple trunked tree through time in the form of her sons with David. And she had passed on to them the same mutations he carried still. Her genes seeded humanity with the mutation he gained from it. The entire works smacked of a paradox, one that stated he was his own distant (like fifty-great grand, or something) ancestor. Made his head ache to think of it. And yet... it was so obscure and so big, that he doubted anyone ever would have noticed it happening. Hell he wasn't even sure of it.

The outcome of the skiff burning, thanks to William J. Johns and his flashbacks, was that he was even more stuck and more stationary then he'd been before. The simple fact was they were all in grave danger. He hated being locked away from his ship. He despised being cooped up in this too small space because of darkness. And he hated that there were moments when he wanted to just march out into the downpour, alone, and get back to space and time. He'd never left people in such danger when he might save a few, however. Just because he was responsible for the end of the Time War didn't mean he could afford to start that behavior now. So he stayed.

Doctor Who and the Threads of Time
Part Seven: St. Albans Space Bazaar, Late October 2518.

Having gotten the annoying time line-crossing Time Lady to flee off to whatever meddling she was bound to be up to, the post-War Doctor marched into the room where he was to meet one William J. Johns. Johns was, still, a merc. In this case the fact that the ex-morphine addict had remained a merc, at least part time, proved to be to the Doctor's advantage because the fellow was able to get his grubby paws on intel that other sources had not been able to turn up. What surprised 'Jon Smythe' was the fact that ex-docking pilot, Carolyn Fry, had stayed with Bill in the past few months since he'd left them on Helion Prime. He had little intention of hiding from them that he and Richard had been living here, in Blue Sun space, dating back to the very day that the Hunter-Gratzner set off from Persephone. Although explaining his current state might take some doing...

The redhead was not in immediate view, but the blond ex-docking pilot rushed up to him and hugged both he and Jacob before he could put up any sort of resistance. Although she hated cryo with a passion, she'd come this way, on her claim money, with Johns, because Alliance shipping had paid off her debts to the Company when she sued them for how the maintenance on her previous ship had been handled. The New Meccan courts had listened to her, Johns, Imam, and young Ali and given them a very nice settlement for wrongful deaths and other hardships. On top of this she won a disability suit claiming that she could no longer work a Ghost run after the crash. Johns promised that once they settled down they'd never go into cryo again. That was the only reason she'd been able to get into the sleeper tube to begin with this time.

Ok, ok... I know I've not posted nothin'

But I've been working on a long overdue instalment of "How the Doctor was Won" (that's my First Doctor/TARDIS story) covering from Vicki joining up to when Ian and Barbara leave. I've managed to chop the scripts down from 158 pages to 130 and rewrite about 7-8 of them into story format. Slow going when the plot bunnies for other stuff keep bouncing into my head, although none of them there bunnies actually are providing anything useful.

Adult revision of chapter 26 of "Great Eclipse" is about half done and I could have finished it today but... I got caught up reading something instead *blushes*.

Chapter 7 of "Threads of Time" is nearly done just a bit of filling in and fleshing out should make it readable.

"All About" is on temporary hold until I get "Threads of Time" done if only because I need to work out how the changes that the Second Doctor's decisions will have on Victoria when they collect her up.

Also chapter 27 of  "Tangled Web" is on the boards, with Mal and the crew finally wiggling out of the situation with the Alliance. I'm toying with the idea that the Parasite will be contained enough for there to be a few eps from Dr Who slipped into play, Particularly End of the World, through World War III, before going back to Firefly again. Thoughts?

Collusion

Almost everyone decided eventually to follow Carolyn’s example and try to rest. Johns was not quite asleep when they started to trickle in. Maybe it was the being inside yet another set of walls, behind another layer of doors and sharp spikes, bathed in light even though they want to sleep, that was the attraction. Maybe it was the need to stay together. Even the Doctor settled down into his cot, the third time anyone can recall him using it ever. Riddick made like he was sleeping, but he was really standing guard, without the standing part.

It was after the high that came down, and after a week more of things falling into a pattern, and his forgetting about his vision and his being in a bad mood because he can see Rich fucking flirting with the Doctor now in front of everyone and nobody gave a shit. It pissed him off, seeing the con smile like that. What right did the killer have to be happy? And then Fry was giving him the cold shoulder as though they'd not talked and he couldn't figure out why the hussy was so well liked that everyone else jumped to her defense anyhow...

Gauntlet

Everything that could be run on the power cells or backup generators had been switched over during the twilight ‘night’ of the partially blocked blue star. The lights were brought in to a more centrally located arrangement with leaders heading off to the restrooms and the skiff. White sheets were hung to help with reflection of the ambient light. The outer doors and windows became places to avoid. Even the toilet was given an extra bit of a go-over, retaining more light in an effort to make the private space secure even though it was a bit away from the main area. The hanger office however was taken off the “kept lit” list and no matter how much Johns protested he couldn't stop the heavy crates that were piled in front of the door. He'd have to start shooting up in the sleeping area. At least the sheets gave them some privacy if they wanted it, being hung as they were on the cables around and between the beds.

That didn't mean he felt comfortable doing it where the kids might see him, though. The toilet was out for that purpose, the rule was that the light was to be conserved, as was the water and heat. They didn't know how much time they had, so they needed to conserve. This translated to moving the grooming supplies out of the toilet and reducing the small room to waste elimination. According to Fry the powercells of the Hunter-Gratzner could run the light generators for years, fully charged. The fact that they'd crashed half through the journey cut that down to six months to a year, but then the Doctor had worked out a way to recharge the cells on solar and there was a good chance that he'd managed to get them at least eight months worth of light.

This did not include the cost of using the cooking surface or making water. Both tasks took far more power than the light generators did. They had paper to burn though, so if worse came to, there was that minor glimmer of hope. In short though, they likely had more than enough power in the Hunter-Gratzner powercells to get them through a few months of the eclipse, at least. Longer if they were careful. Johns supposed then that he should be grateful.

Outside, the wind was silent. After so long a time of constant noise the lack of sound was loud. They gathered at the inner doors and listened, straining to hear any evidence of the wind. Jack plucked up a fiber optic light that showed steady clear hot light. “I think it's stopped.” It was like the planet decided to take a breather and be still for a moment. Midmorning and the shadows had fled for just a little while, letting the sun back in like a tease.

They all gathered at the inner doors and listened. It was so very quiet. They came to a silent agreement to risk opening the inner doors, and the boys used the hydraulic lift to move the blockage from in front of the seams first. Richard and the Doctor worked together to lift the large locking bar and carry it aside then returned to wiggle the sunken poles up out of the drill holes that held the doors in place. The huge portal was designed to close quickly, but reopening it took a bit of time.

Doctor Who and the Threads of Time

Part four:St Albans Space Bazaar, Wild Space/Alliance Fringe, Late 'October', 2518.

Romana had not expected to see another of her kind here. Well, not totally true. She had expected to see the Doctor here. If nothing else the Doctor was more 'her kind' than anything else. To say she loved him would be an understatement. She'd literally remade herself for him, once she realized that he was not going to ever bridge the gap that existed between them in her first form. She'd thought she had the lives to spare, after all. He was three ahead of her.

Somehow he managed to remain ahead of her, no matter how many alters she spun off in her attempt to get more done at the same time. It was not legal, but it was her right as president in such extreme conditions such as this, to use her lives for the good of Gallifrey. She didn't have the choice but to live more than one life at a time. Although she would bet that the Doctor would accuse her of having a bad case of multiple personality even though she more viewed it as living her life rather more non-linearly than most. Besides by the time this life caught up with the next one it would be too late to do this. By using K-9 and Leela as communication sources and keeping an open bridge with her TARDIS she'd found ways to communicate with her other selves, deliberately crossing lifetimes with them. The Matrix had shown her how to do it.

Twilight

It was well past noon again when the sandcat rolled to a stop with the third load from the crash site. Simon and River appeared and began unloading. The wind had been picking up steadily, but now it fell into a silent calm. The pause before all hell broke loose, likely. Abu and the pilgrims jumped out and called for help. Johns wanted to tell Fry directly about the storm he spotted, by way of explaining why there's such a calm around them now, “Where’s Fry?” Behind him Arabic filled the air with speed. The Doctor joined the others outside and listened to the panicked chatter. Johns snagged him instead, “Spotted a sandstorm, looks to be headed this way.”

The Doctor frowned, “Abu, back the 'cat and trailers into the hanger, for unloading later.” They will have to push it out to get it started if it sits for very long, but at least it won’t become unusable like it might if left out in the coming sirocco. Right now everyone needed to push into double-time and help re-enforce the roof, “Richard shouldn’t be the only one working on the re-enforcements.” He pointed up to where the ex-ranger was laboring. Johns might have had some issues with that but for the fact that the odd fellow was completely correct. Even Carolyn forewent the Skiff in favor of helping with the frantic job of getting the roof finished. Riddick remained up there, doing the hard, hot work of attaching. The pilgrims hoisted up materials, Imam, Simon, and the Doctor set to ferrying the needed salvage to the building while Jack, Ali, Fry and River worked to get the siding loose.
